Willingness to Partner

This homeowner learned a variety of skills which she used to frame her own home and her neighbors' homes.
(Suzy Dolan/SCHFH)
We expect the families we select to become full partners with us. At a minimum, Willingness To Partner includes:
  • Filling out the application completely, correctly, truthfully and on time
  • Providing all of the required documentation on time
  • Being cooperative and courteous in scheduling your home visit
  • Understanding the sweat-equity requirements and meeting the schedule SCHFH sets for your sweat equity completion (300 hours per adult in the home)
  • Meeting the schedule SCHFH sets for down-payment installments ($70 per month)
  • Attending all required homeowner education and construction classes with a positive attitude
  • Willingness to have your family's name and new house location shared with the public, and to participate in Public Relations endeavors, including appearing in any associated photographs and videos
  • Maintaining a courteous demeanor and pleasant attitude when dealing with volunteers and staff at the construction site

Sweat Equity
Each adult in the household must complete 300 hours of sweat equity. Sweat equity primarily consists of labor building others’ houses and your own house. This may include demanding physical work in various weather conditions. (Construction training classes are available.)  A portion of your sweat equity consists of homeowner education workshops and classes. If you are disabled or have medical conditions that don’t permit the standard construction hours, we will work out a plan based on what you can do (doctor’s note required). Be aware that children under 16 are not allowed on the job site.

Habitat follows a very strict nondiscrimination policy regarding gender, family/marital status, sexual orientation, religion, skin color, ethnic background, country of origin, age and disability. We do not discriminate in hiring employees or in selecting homeowners.

Although we are a Christian organization, we do not seek to convert our volunteers or our homeowners. Around the world and within the U.S., we serve those in need, whoever they may be. We gratefully welcome help from all who want to join our fight to make simple, decent housing a matter of conscience.

Government Funding
SCHFH houses are funded in a number of ways. For some of the homes we build in Claton County, we receive funding assistance from the Clayton County Board of Commissioners, through a HOME Investment Partner Act [HOME] Program grant, provided to Clayton County by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD].
