What to Expect

(Kim MacDonald/HFHI)
After the application workshop, you have 30 (thirty) days to turn in your completed application with all of the required documentation. Applications packets from the most recent workshop must be received with ALL of the required documentation before 4:30 pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Applications will not be accepted after this time.

Our Family Selection Committee will then review all of the applications received. A committee member may contact you by phone or in writing if there are questions about your application. If you do not meet the financial qualifications, you will receive a letter explaining why you did not qualify. This process may take up to three months. If the conditions that disqualified you change, you may apply again the next year.

There is no limit to the number of times you may apply, and we encourage applicants to keep applying. One SCHFH homeowner applied three years in a row before she was accepted into the program!

If you meet the financial qualifications, a committee member will call you to schedule a home visit. You should schedule a time when all of your household members will be present. Two members of the committee will conduct the home visit to view your current housing conditions, meet your family, discuss any questions you or they may have about your application, and review the program requirements. Be prepared to show the originals of all documentation you provided with your application.

Once the home visits are completed, the committee will discuss their findings and make recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will then vote on which applicants will be accepted. This part of the process may take another month. At that time, you will either receive a letter of congratulations or one letting you know that you have not been accepted into this year’s program.

If you are accepted, you will be asked to come to the office to sign an official letter of notification and acceptance. You are then free to begin your path to homeownership by scheduling your sweat-equity hours.

Habitat follows a very strict nondiscrimination policy regarding gender, family/marital status, sexual orientation, religion, skin color, ethnic background, country of origin, age and disability. We do not discriminate in hiring employees or in selecting homeowners.

Although we are a Christian organization, we do not seek to convert our volunteers or our homeowners. Around the world and within the U.S., we serve those in need, whoever they may be. We gratefully welcome help from all who want to join our fight to make simple, decent housing a matter of conscience.

Government Funding
SCHFH houses are funded in a number of ways. For some of the homes we build in Claton County, we receive funding assistance from the Clayton County Board of Commissioners, through a HOME Investment Partner Act [HOME] Program grant, provided to Clayton County by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD].

Thank you for donating!
