Location & Choices

A soon-to-be homeowner selects the flooring and countertops for her new home.
(Steffan Hacker/HFHI)
Habitat partner-families may not specify where their house will be built. SCHFH builds wherever we have land available in our tri-county area (Fayette, Clayton, and Henry Counties).

Our house designs meet county regulations. In Clayton County, most houses have three bedrooms, two full baths, a kitchen, a family room, a dining area, an insulated one-car garage and a small patio. The homeowner is typically allowed to choose from a selection of carpet colors, vinyl floor patterns, countertops and lighting fixtures. All rooms are painted antique white. Homes are equipped with central air conditioning and heat. Ceiling fans are installed in bedrooms. Whirlpool donates a new refrigerator and range. The floor plan, and the color and style of the outside siding will be selected to suit the lot size, meet county codes and blend into the neighborhood.

You are not guaranteed a "new" house. If a Habitat homeowner defaults on his/her mortgage, SCHFH forecloses that property, rehabilitates the house and sells it to the next qualified family on our list.

As land has become increasingly more difficult and more expensive to obtain, many Habitat affiliates have started building duplexes or condominiums. Although SCHFH has not yet built any of these, it is likely that we will begin this type of construction in the near future. There is also the possibility that SCHFH would purchase non-Habitat houses and rehabilitate them to sell to our family partners. Our goal, as always, is to provide you with a simple, decent home of your own.

Habitat follows a very strict nondiscrimination policy regarding gender, family/marital status, sexual orientation, religion, skin color, ethnic background, country of origin, age and disability. We do not discriminate in hiring employees or in selecting homeowners.

Although we are a Christian organization, we do not seek to convert our volunteers or our homeowners. Around the world and within the U.S., we serve those in need, whoever they may be. We gratefully welcome help from all who want to join our fight to make simple, decent housing a matter of conscience.

Government Funding
SCHFH houses are funded in a number of ways. For some of the homes we build in Claton County, we receive funding assistance from the Clayton County Board of Commissioners, through a HOME Investment Partner Act [HOME] Program grant, provided to Clayton County by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD].
