Gala Raises Funds for Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity and Other Fayette County Nonprofits

It’s very seldom that you find film and philanthropy in the same sentence, but since 2014, Pinewood Studios has been an instrumental part of creating awareness and raising funds for Fayette County nonprofits through their annual winter gala. Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity is honored to be one of those benefitting nonprofits.

This year’s red carpet gala featured a mystical experience from META studios, photo booths, delicious cuisine from Hanna Brothers Catering, and more.

Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity uses the money raised from the “Reel People Care” Pinewood Studios Atlanta Winter Gala to go towards our mission of making sure that every one has a decent and safe place to call home. Last year, we were able to complete a project for a Peachtree City family that needed critical home repairs.

Southern Crescent Habitat Helps Organization Fight Hunger in Clayton County

Diane Soroko bags items for the Weekend Food Bags to distribute to students in Clayton County Public Schools

Today, one in six families spend at least half their income in rent or mortgage, often choosing between paying for housing or purchasing food. Unfortunately, this is the story of far too many families. Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity is not only doing their part to ensure everyone has a decent place to live, but they are aiding Nothing but the Truth Ministries in their fight against hunger.

According to Cathy Cochran, Southern Crescent Habitat’s Family Services Manager, “Habitat works closely with families that fit the demographic serviced by Nothing but the Truth Ministries. They are low to moderate-income families that sometimes lack the basic necessities, such as food and shelter. We are just happy to be able to provide them with a place to serve our community. ”

Every Friday morning, Nothing but the Truth Ministries and several volunteers fill the Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity conference room to pack “Weekend Food Bags” for Clayton County students to take home in their backpacks. The “Weekend Food Bags” are given to children that school counselors identified as being “food insecure” and in need of additional food for the weekend. The bags typically contain easy-open/self-serve items sourced from Midwest Food Bank in Peachtree City, as well as donations from the local community.

“Some of these students do not get to experience the simple things that we take for granted…like going in the pantry and knowing that there is something to eat. We often associate hunger with third world countries, but it is happening right in our own backyards,” exclaimed Diane Soroko, the Nothing but the Truth Clayton County Program Coordinator.

The “Weekend Food” Ministry started in Gwinnett County over 10 years ago and branched out the Clayton County about 5 years ago. There are currently six schools and over 190 students that receive weekend food bags in Clayton County Schools.

Home Dedications and Volunteer Appreciation

New Habitat homeowners during home dedication presentation

On June 1st, Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity celebrated the home dedications of five new homeowners and the volunteers that made it possible. The event kicked off with home tours provided by a few of our partner families followed by a beautiful program that culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

During the program, SCHFH CEO Cynthia Jenkins launched the Friends of Southern Crescent Memorial Fund and honored the memories of John Flowers and Sandra Childress. We also recognized Collective Insights (Volunteer Group of the Year) and Gray Ghost Dave Hesterlee (Volunteer of the Year).

After renting apartments for about 40 years, new homeowner Ms. Haney was ecstatic to cut the ribbon on her new three bedroom craftsman style home. Her story along with those of our other homeowners is the reason why we Habitat!

Special thanks to the former CEO Brenda Rayburn, former board president Elias Makres, Clayton County HUD, Wells Fargo, Georgia Power, and the numerous organizations that lent a hand to help us build these homes.

Southern Crescent’s CEO Cynthia Jenkins welcomes Women Build volunteers in Peachtree City, GA

A sea of pink t-shirts and the sound of heavy-duty machinery filled the South Metro Atlanta area over the last few weeks as Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity completed three critical home repairs for seniors in Henry, Clayton, and Fayette Counties for their annual Women Build event.

Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) provided a safe haven for all-women volunteer groups to learn more about construction and landscaping while ensuring our Habitat partner families have a decent place to call home. The volunteers joined our celebrity ambassadors Brandi Harvey of Beyond Her, Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista, Pauli Wade of Wade Works Creative, Dianna Williams of Lifetime’s Bring It!, HGTV Host Egypt Sherrod, Melissa Ingram of Aspire TV, Megan Elliot of Lush to Blush, and Nikki Free of NikkiFreeStyle. The homeowners included a former educator and cancer survivor, a disabled grandmother, and a current bus driver for Fayette County Schools.

With JACOBS engineering group serving as the Community Builder sponsor, SCHFH was able to finish two of the projects and get a jumpstart on the final one. Some of the additional sponsors included Piedmont Fayette Hospital, Wade Works Creative, and the Ladies on Spokes cycling club.

SCHFH joins MOMS Club of Fayetteville for Church Street Park Dedication

Over the past few years, Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity has assisted the MOMS Club of Fayetteville in their efforts to revitalize Church Street Park. On April 27, surrounded by all of the community sponsors and local families, Fayetteville Mayor Ed Johnson revealed a new sign during the 3rd annual Church Street Park Festival. In addition to SCHFH, sponsors include Heritage Bank, Clothes Less Traveled, Resurgens Orthopedic, Coweta-Fayette EMC, Main Street Fayetteville, and the city of Fayetteville.

Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity begins project to renovate home of fallen police officer

Continuing our mission to build hope in the South Atlanta Metro area, Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity partnered with Team Depot on March 15th to construct an accessibility ramp for Bradin Maddox, the son of fallen Locust Grove Police Officer Chase Maddox. Building the ramp was the first step in Southern Crescent’s extensive plan to make the Maddox home accessible for Bradin and those who care for him.

Last year tragedy struck the Locust Grove community when Officer Maddox was killed in the line of duty while assisting two Henry County deputies issue a failure to appear warrant. Officer Maddox, a McDonough native, was a veteran of the National Guard. Just four days after the fatal incident, his widow, Alex Maddox, gave birth to the couple’s second son, Bodie. The couple’s oldest son has cerebral palsy and his mobility is very limited.

Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer program, contributed $10k in gift cards to jumpstart the project followed by another $10k from the Home Depot Foundation. Employees from various Home Depot stores, Southern Crescent
staff, and volunteers worked tirelessly in the inclement weather to finish the ramp at the Maddox residence in Griffin, GA.

Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity hopes to rally additional community partners to complete other renovations in the home. For more information on how you can help Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity with the Chase Maddox project or other families, please email development@schabitat.org or donate to the GoFundMe at www.gofundme.com/thechasemaddoxproject.

Southern Crescent joins affliates around the state for a Day at the Dome

Georgia’s Habitat for Humanity affiliates gathered in the Capital for this year’s Habitat Day at the Dome on February 6th. Southern Crescent had 5 representatives from the 100 Women Who L.E.A.D to help advocate on the passing of House Bill 344. This bill approves a referendum- allowing for property tax exemption on vacant lots Habitat holds for future development. The passing of this bill can make an $8,000 a year difference in expenses.

Fulfilling the Dream: Georgia Power Joins SCHFH for a Day of Service

Georgia Power joined forces with Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity on January 21, 2019 for a day of service to commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. A group of GA Power volunteers, future Habitat homeowners, and Southern Crescent staff worked together to complete homes in the Hannah Springs neighborhood in Lovejoy, GA.

Last year during the MLK Build, Georgia Power helped us raise the walls on the home of Jasmine Nance and by the end of this month, we will be closing on 4 other homes in Hannah Springs. “When you’re able to help build your neighbors home and they are able to build yours…you know each other, you look out for each other…great sense of community,” exclaims Ms. Nance about her experience with SCHFH.
