Build season officially kicked off last week as we began construction on Meadowlark Lane in Jonesboro for newest Habitat homeowner Rickita Burney! Rickita has been a joy to partner with over the past year, and she’s nearly done with her 300 hours worth of “sweat equity” all homeowners must complete in order to own their own Habitat home. Before we hand her her keys, we asked her a few questions so everyone can get to know her a bit better.

Please tell us a little about you and your family.

I’m Rickita Burney, 35, a fulltime worker and student. My son Khali is 11 and loves games and Ninja Turtles. My daughter Zariya is 7 and a diva girl.

How does your family spend quality time? What are your hobbies?

My kids and I watch movies, bake, and play family games. My son Khali’s hobby is playing video games and reading. My daughter Zariya likes to read and play dress-up. As for me, I love to read and cook.

Where do you work?

I work for the City of Morrow. I’m an Assistant Court Clerk. I’ve been there for almost a year.

Why did you apply to be a Habitat homeowner?

I want to show my kids that if you pray and work hard at your dreams, they can come true.

What are you looking forward to the most when you are a Habitat homeowner?

I’m looking forward to knowing that I’m paying for something that will be mine in the end. And also knowing that I have accomplished a major goal in my life.

Where do you live now?

I live in an apartment with my 2 kids. Someone recently broke in and now my kids don’t want to come home.

How did you hear about Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity?

I have heard of Habitat for years. And always thought what a blessing it is to have support like that. Then my mom’s neighbor told me to look it up and apply. I did and now I’m here!!!

What about Habitat has been the biggest surprise to you?

I would say the biggest surprise is that everyone I have met so far wants to see you achieve your goal as being a homeowner.

How will your life change once you move into your new home?

Life would be better to know that I can come home and not having anyone running and stomping above me. Have a peaceful night of sleep!

What is the first thing you are going to do in your new home?

The first thing I’m going to do is cook a great big dinner and celebrate with my kids a new beginning.

What would you like to say to Habitat and the volunteers that are going to help you build your new home?

I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. My kids will be in a home they can grown up in, knowing that we can have a place to call ours.
